Week 14: 2010 ambition

Sunday, January 3rd, 2010

What can the White Strikes expect in 2010? Well, to top 2009 we need to win the league and hold on (or improve) on the seasons highs so far. After 14 matches of our 2nd season, it’s looking rosy on the individual and team highs at the moment (with the exception Handicap Series), however we have to take control of the league. We’re in a holding position (3rd) considering we’ve been suffering with a very low team handicap making each week very difficult, in other words, we can’t have a bad performance. Now we are well into the season things have settled down – it’s our chance to get a hold of top spot and stay there.

One massive highlight for me during the first 14 matches was my personal high game (ever) of 299. With 11 strikes in a row (all good ones apart from one in the 6th frame) it came down to the 12th frame. I’d played this over in my mind over the years, thinking how I would react to the pressure (especially when the entire league stops playing and gather around to watch). I always thought I’d do something stupid like drop it in the gutter, forget how to walk or just drop the ball behind me, luckily none of those things happened – I was remarkably calm, I just told myself to do what I’d been doing, hit my mark and roll the ball smoothly. Unfortunately I pulled it slightly and was therefore inside my mark, the ball went high and left me the 6 pin. I was gutted that I hadn’t made the perfect game, but at least I now know I can get there. Next time!

A new season, a new ball, new highs!

tropical-storm

Rather than post up scores/results every week we’ll just look to update the blog every now and then.

We are well into our 2nd season of the Monday Night Doubles at Watford Hollywood bowl. Having truly settled into the league we have made a fast start and after our first 5 matches we have positioned ourselves in the top 4. We actually made too good a start as now we are suffering with no handicap – meaning we have a major challenge on our hands before we even start a match, the head start we give some teams is too much. Due to this we’ve struggled to win our last 2 matches, but things will even out and we’ll win it this year!

Current league position: 4th

From a personal point of view I’m bowling well, averaging 206 (hence no handicap). My new ball (see above) – the Tropical Storm – is awesome, it carries longer and hits hard making the pin scatter. Even on Watford’s dry lanes it works. Danny at Bowlrite Tolworth knows his stuff – a brilliant reccomendation!

vs Bonnie & Clyde

Monday, July 27th, 2009

Game 1 Game 2 Game 3 Total
TWS 458 400 390 1248
Bonnie & Clyde 363 331 364 1058
Points won (out of 32) 8 8 6 8 (30)

PM: We actually played this match last week (because of the wedding) just before we got totally thumped by the High Rollers. We played well and managed to secure most of the points – meaning we still have a slim chance of winning the league. We are 18 points behind (so still mathematically possible) but it means we have to win big and hope Another Nine Then lose badly. It’s not over til the last pin falls!

League position: 2nd

vs High Rollers

Monday, July 20th, 2009

Game 1 Game 2 Game 3 Total
TWS 422 394 393 1209
(Very) High Rollers 576 398 454 1428
Points won (out of 32) 0 2 0 0 (2)

PM: This was unbelievable timing – our opponents played amazing and wiped the floor with us. We can’t be down beat though, there was nothing we could do, we played good but were just beaten fair and square. Makes winning this thing a little more difficult. We’ll bounce back next week – we have to! Down to 2nd :(

AM: I bowled pretty well in this match, the only trouble was that my opponent started off with 7 strikes in a row ending up with a massive score. I scraped the second game but then lost the last one. Nothing much we could have done.

League position: 2nd

vs If Only

Monday, July 13th, 2009

Game 1 Game 2 Game 3 Total
TWS 413 420 376 1209
If Only 397 391 409 1195
Points won (out of 32) 8 6 2 6 (22)

PM: This was another close match. Our winning run continues and we’ve stretched out a little lead in the race for the league title. Our closest rivals lost heavily, so we go into next week with a 15 point gap. We just need to keep our heads and concentrate on the matches in hand. Next week is important as we are playing two matches on the same night – only 3 matches left!

AM: Back after Dave kindly stepped in for me last week and helped push the team up to 1st place! This week we were playing Dave’s team, but this time he took the week off. I bowled well and managed to win all my points and we’ve pulled away from 2nd and 3rd. ‘Another Nine’ didn’t play this week so could get some of that ground back but as long as we keep winning that won’t happen.

League position: 1st

vs You Got Served

Monday, July 6th, 2009

Game 1 Game 2 Game 3 Total
TWS 338 405 469 1212
You Got Served 409 308 371 1088
Points won (out of 32) 0 8 8 6 (22)

PM: We’ve finally made it to the top. At last! Andy was away this week, anyone would think he’s got a wedding to prepare for. We drafted in Dave Ashwood (thanks Dave) as our special sub. We lost the first game comprehensively, we both played crap. However we pulled it back in the 2nd and 3rd games. I hit some good form too, hitting a 226 and 230, making a 618 in total (you can work out the rubbish first game). 4 matches left, let’s hope the winning run continues, it would be great to win the league at the first time of asking.

League position: 1st

vs Three Lions

Monday, June 29th, 2009

Game 1 Game 2 Game 3 Total
TWS 404 342 418 1164
Three Lions 378 388 385 1152
Points won (out of 32) 6 2 6 6 (20)

PM: This was a good match. Hard fought and very sticky (it was hot tonight). We had a crap 2nd game, but the rest was solid and we came through deserving winners. The best thing though is that we’re up to 2nd place in the league. The highest we’ve been and now ONLY 12 points off top spot. What a finish to the league – only 5 matches to go!

League position: 2nd

vs The Unknown

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

Game 1 Game 2 Game 3 Total
TWS 456 395 420 1271
The Unknown 381 432 382 1195
Points won (out of 32) 8 2 8 6 (24)

PM: After maximum points last week we were determined not to slip up this week. The run in has truely begun and it’s possible to feel the tension from the top teams. We performed like true champs tonight, only dropping 8 points along the way. It was hard fought and very satisfiying in the end. I had a tidy 614 too, not bad.

League position: 3rd

vs The Pinball Wizards

Monday, June 15th, 2009

Game 1 Game 2 Game 3 Total
TWS 460 365 335 1160
The Pinball Wizards 369 343 371 1083
Points won (out of 32) 8 8 8 8 (32)

PM: This was a comfortable win and our first maximum pointer in a very long while. Hopefully this is the start of a Man Utd style finish to the season. I had 2 strong games followed in the 3rd with a scrappy one – it’s all about winning now, style can wait til next season ;)

League position: 5th

vs Toon Army & Ave It

Monday, June 8th, 2009

Game 1 Game 2 Game 3 Total
TWS 340 413 415 1168
Toon Army 431 404 335 1170
Points won (out of 32) 0 8 8 2 (18)

PM: After a disastrous start we managed to pull it back and gain a scrappy win. It could’ve been a lot better if I’d managed to spare at least once in the final game (stringing strikes wasn’t the problem!). Damn you spares!

League position: 5th

Game 1 Game 2 Game 3 Total
TWS 377 412 373 1162
Ave It 392 413 360 1165
Points won (out of 32) 0 2 8 2 (12)

PM: This was our canceled fixture from w/c 18th May. We played this immediately after the match against Toon Army. In a nutshell we played OK but nothing special. It was quite difficult playing 6 games in a row especially as it was hot in the centre and our opponents had a fresh player playing. We didn’t deserve to win but the fact we lost by only a few pins in the 2nd game and the overall pinfall made it much harder to swallow. The Toon Army match was close, this was even closer – annoying for it to happen on the same night!

League position: 5th
